Earplugs for sleeping · 2026 · 20 pairs, 10 weeks

The best earplugs for sleeping.

Traffic, thin walls, a neighbor’s television: anyone who sleeps light buys their first box of earplugs sooner or later. They buy the second box because the first pair did not stay in. We wore twenty pairs for ten weeks, night after night, and the ranking came down to which pair was still there in the morning.

BOLLSEN Life+Low profile · reusable silicone · aluminum case

$36.95list price24 dB attenuation★★★★★ 4.8

Still comfortable after eight hours, side sleeping included. The plug sits inside the ear canal and nothing protrudes toward the pillow — and that is what separates it from the rest of the field.

  • Flush body: no pressure against the pillow when you sleep on your side
  • 24 dB attenuation, measured by the independent German lab PZT GmbH
  • Soft medical-grade silicone: free of BPA, PVC and latex
  • Up to 100 nights on one pair, washable
  • Three ear sizes in the box, plus an aluminum case for the nightstand
  • They do not make silence: loud noise gets quieter, it does not go away

What we actually measured

At night it is not attenuation that decides it. It is whether you take them out at two in the morning.

Most of our testers sleep on their side, and that is where a protruding stem or ring presses into the pillow. Eleven of the twenty pairs came out mid-night, usually within the first two hours. Every one of those models had a respectable number on the box.

So we scored comfort after two hours, staying in until morning and reusability. Attenuation was a requirement here, not a criterion: a model without a measured figure did not enter the ranking at all.

Will I still hear my alarm?

Yes. The plug quiets everything by roughly the same amount and does not pass high tones selectively — if anything it takes most off the high end. Your alarm wakes you because it is loud and right beside your head.

Comfortable on your side too, and that is exactly where almost everything else fails.

The test

Through ten weeks of nights — a street-facing bedroom, a thin-walled apartment, hotel rooms — the BOLLSEN Life+ were the only pair our testers left in until morning.

An earplug you pull out at midnight blocks zero decibels after midnight.

You do not feel them on the pillow

The tapered body with two flanges closes flush with the ear. No stem, no ring, so there is nothing to catch when you roll onto your side. That was the cleanest difference in the whole test.

Enough for the street, not too much for the alarm

24 dB to EN 352-2. Traffic and voices through a wall fall away to quiet background noise, and the alarm still gets through because it is loud and sounding right beside your ear.

One pair for a year

Up to 100 uses, washable in lukewarm soapy water. Worn nightly the cost works out at a few cents a night, against disposable foam counted by the piece.

Ten weeks of nights. Still the same pair.

Rooth C&P

less than our #1
★★★★☆ 4.2
  • Sits flat against the ear rather than standing proud of it, so a pillow cannot press it deeper
  • Softens and picks up lint with use — it will not see out a year the way a shaped plug does
  • One piece you shape yourself, so a very large or very small canal takes some practice
3

Disposable foam plugs

far cheaper
★★★★☆ 3.8
  • Highest stated attenuation in the test, at pennies a pair
  • Have to be rolled between your fingers — not with dirty hands
  • In the trash after one night
4

Alpine SleepSoft

similar price bracket
★★★★☆ 3.6
  • Soft material and easy to find in stores
  • The stem sticks out, and side sleepers felt it
  • Lower attenuation than the winner
5

Wax plugs

cheaper
★★★☆☆ 3.1
  • Mold to the shape of your ear
  • Soften in the warmth and catch in your hair
  • Good for a handful of uses
6

Loop Quiet

slightly pricier
★★★☆☆ 3.0
  • Distinctive design, pleasant silicone
  • The outer ring catches on the pillow
  • Works loose when you turn over

Method

How we tested

20pairs bought at retail
10 weeksof nights
3criteria: comfort at 2 hours, still in by morning, reuse

We bought twenty pairs at retail and wore them nightly for ten weeks: in a street-facing bedroom, in a thin-walled apartment and in hotels. Every morning we logged whether they were still in. Not one pair came from a manufacturer.

The winner’s attenuation was measured by an independent German laboratory to EN 352-2: 24 dB overall, of which 24 dB at high tones, 21 dB at mid and 19 dB at low. It is a passive plug with no electronics: it lowers the volume, it does not close the ear. Results vary from person to person and depend on how you insert them.

TrustScore comparison · 7 September 2026

Four earplug brands on Trustpilot. One is rated Excellent.

Trustpilot gives every company it lists a TrustScore out of 5 and a rating band. We looked up the branded reusable earplugs that appear in our tests. Only one of them reaches the top band, Excellent.

Why 4.3 and not 5.0

Excellent starts at 4.3 on Trustpilot. A perfect 5.0 usually means a company has collected very few ratings, so one more review moves the score. BOLLSEN is the only brand here that reaches it, on a profile you can open and check yourself.

Method. TrustScores read from each brand’s public Trustpilot profile on 7 September 2026. Where a brand runs several country profiles, we used the one with the most reviews, so every row shows a global profile rather than a local one. Brands with fewer than 250 reviews are not shown. Star ratings are the ones Trustpilot displays, rounded to the nearest half star. Trustpilot bands: Excellent 4.3 to 5.0, Great 3.8 to 4.2, Average 3.0 to 3.7. Scores change as new reviews come in.
